DISNEY WORLD WATER PARKS

River Country, the first of Disney's water parks, was opened in the mid seventies. Located on the edge of Bay Lake in Fort Wilderness, River country is Disney's version of an old-fashioned swimming hole.  It has all the water park standards like flume rides, water slides and a white water rapid ride. There are also nature trails and one of the only beaches in Central Florida.

River Country draws it's water supply from Bay Lake with the use of a pump and filtration system located inside an artificial mountain. It then distributed the water at about 8,500 gallons per minute. The excess water is then returned to the lake.  Open year-round. 407-824-4321

Typhoon Lagoon,
According to legend, Typhoon Lagoon was formed by a hurricane, "instead of a certain watery doom, the winds swept them here to Typhoon Lagoon..." This explains the trees that are impaled by surfboards and the location of Miss Tilly , a shrimp boat that is precariously balanced on the top of Mount Mayday.

The main water attraction is the Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool, the world's largest wave lagoon. However, there are also numerous slides, raft rides and open places to work on your tan.

One of the more unusual features is the Shark Reef, a snorkeling experience with sharks that is sponsored by MAUI.

Don't worry about the temperature of the water, special heaters keep the water warm throughout the year.

Open year-round. 407-824-4321

Blizzard Beach,
This is the latest and largest of the Disney water parks. Opened in April of 1995, Blizzard Beach was built because of the continued popularity of the two other water parks.

The official ostensible story about the creation of Blizzard Beach centers around a freak snow storm. As the snow melted around Florida's first ski lodge, designers saw an alligator sliding down the slopes. This gave them the idea of turning the ski jumps and slopes into water rides.

Blizzard Beach's main attraction is the Summit Plummet, the world's tallest and fastest free-fall slide. There are 18 other water based attractions including tobboggan runs, flumes and slides. There's also a beach.
